TLDR
- Prefect works, but seat pricing, governance gated to Enterprise, and Python-only flows push teams to look elsewhere.
- Prefect now owns Dagster, so Dagster is a different product from the same family, not a clean exit.
- Airflow, Temporal, Kestra, Windmill and Mage each fix a different problem, from ecosystem size to durable execution to open source governance.
- Staying on Prefect is still the right call for small, Python-only teams on the free or Starter plan.
- Unmeshed prices by workflow execution, not by seat, and self-hosts the full platform.
If you're looking at Prefect alternatives, something probably nudged you. Maybe the seat count. Maybe the bill. Maybe you read that Prefect bought Dagster and thought, wait, what does that mean for me?
Fair question. So we sorted seven options by the reason you'd leave Prefect, not by feature count, because a wall of checkmarks never helped anyone pick.
Picking an orchestrator is a lot like picking a gym. Some charge per person, some per visit, some per machine you touch. And the price only feels fair once you know how you actually work out.
One more thing. We build a product in this space, so we're on this list. We'll say where every tool wins, Prefect included. Each price and feature below comes from the vendor's own pages, and we haven't run all seven ourselves.
Okay, let's get into it.
1. What Is Prefect and Why Do Teams Look for Prefect Alternatives?
Prefect is a Python native workflow orchestration platform with an open-source core and a managed cloud. Teams look at Prefect alternatives for five reasons. Seat-based pricing, governance locked to Enterprise, Python-only flows, uncertainty after the Dagster deal, and a different kind of job.
So, what is Prefect in kid terms? You write a normal Python function. You stick @flow on top of it and @task on the little steps inside. Prefect then handles scheduling, retries, and a dashboard, so you don't build all that yourself.
It's a solid tool, and plenty of teams are happy with it. But the reasons people go looking at Prefect competitors are pretty consistent.
- Seat-based pricing: Team costs $100 per user per month, so every new teammate adds to the bill.
- Governance behind Enterprise: SSO, RBAC, and ACLs, and SCIM only show up on the custom Enterprise plan.
- Python only: Flows are Python functions with decorators, with no JSON or YAML way to define them.
- The Dagster deal: Two orchestrators now share one owner, and some teams want to see how that plays out.
- A different job: Some teams want a durable execution engine, or approvals built into the workflow, more than a Python scheduler.
Here's what the plans look like on Prefect's pricing page.
| Plan | Price | Users | Deployments | What Stands Out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby | Free | 2 | 5 | 500 minutes of Prefect Serverless, 7 days of run history |
| Starter | $100 a month | 3 | 20 | Bring your own compute, webhooks |
| Team | $100 per user a month | 4 to 8 | 100 | Service accounts, 24-hour audit log |
| Enterprise | Custom | 5 and up | Unlimited | SSO, RBAC and ACLs, SCIM, multiple workspaces |
Prices change, so check that page before you decide.
2. How Does This Data Orchestration Comparison Work?
This data orchestration comparison judges each tool on five things. How you define workflows, how it's priced, how you run it, what governance you get without a sales call, and how it handles retries and long-running work. Every fact comes from the vendor's own pages.
We asked the same five questions of all seven Prefect alternatives. And yes, we asked them of ourselves too.
- Definition: Python, YAML, JSON, or a mix.
- Pricing: Per seat, per run, per credit, or flat.
- Hosting: Managed cloud, self-hosted, or both.
- Governance: What you get before you talk to sales.
- Long-running work: How it handles retries, waits, and crashes.
Here's the quick view.
| Tool | Type | Starting Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unmeshed | Workflow orchestration | Free, then $20 a month | Teams that want flat pricing and JSON, YAML, or code |
| Apache Airflow | Open source orchestrator | Free to run | Data teams that want the biggest ecosystem |
| Dagster | Asset-based orchestrator | $10 a month (Solo) | Teams that think in data assets |
| Temporal | Durable execution engine | $50 per million actions | Long-running, stateful work |
| Kestra | Declarative orchestrator | Free open source | Teams that want YAML and a big plugin catalog |
| Windmill | Script-first platform | Free open source | Script-heavy teams building workflows and apps |
| Mage | Data pipeline tool | $29 a month plus usage | Notebook-style data work |
3. What Are the Other Six Prefect Alternatives?
The seven Prefect alternatives are Unmeshed, Apache Airflow, Dagster, Temporal, Kestra, Windmill, and Mage. They split into flat-priced orchestrators, data pipeline tools, durable execution engines, and script-first platforms. Each one below covers who makes it, what it does well, where it falls short, and what it costs.
1. Unmeshed

Unmeshed is a workflow orchestration platform from the team behind Netflix Conductor, priced by workflow execution instead of by seat. You define workflows in JSON, YAML, or code, run workers in four languages, and self-host the whole platform. It suits teams that outgrew per-seat pricing.
So, who are we? The same people who worked on the ideas behind Netflix Conductor, now building a platform for workflows, APIs, and AI steps in one engine. Yes, we're on our own list. We'll tell you where we lose too.
Pros
- Flat pricing by workflow execution, so adding teammates doesn't change the bill. See our flat pricing.
- JSON, YAML, or code definitions, plus a visual designer.
- Workers in Java, Go, TypeScript, or Python through our SDKs, and hosted functions for Python, JS, or TS, and Go.
- Approval steps and a built-in decision engine.
- Self-host the full platform, control plane included.
Pricing
- Free forever includes 2,000 workflow executions a month.
- Premium is $20 a month for 10,000 executions.
- Enterprise is custom, with unlimited executions, workflows, and seats, plus SSO, SAML, and role-based access control.
Pick it if seat counts are the thing that hurts. Want the line-by-line version? Our full comparison covers it.
2. Apache Airflow

Apache Airflow is the open-source orchestrator from the Apache Software Foundation, built by its community. You define pipelines in Python, and a scheduler hands tasks to workers through a message queue. It's free to run, so you pay in setup and upkeep.
Think of Airflow as the neighborhood everyone already lives in. Lots of data teams know it, so finding help is easy. It also keeps moving. The 3.3.0 release on July 6, 2026 added stateful tasks and multi-language support.
Pros
- The biggest ecosystem, with plug-and-play operators for Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure.
- Pipelines are plain Python, so you can generate them dynamically.
- A web UI for status and logs.
- An AI provider that reached 1.0 in October 2026 with agents, sandboxes, and human approval.
Cons
- You run it yourself, which takes setup and ongoing care.
- Pipelines are defined in Python only.
Pricing
- Free and open source, with no pricing page.
If Airflow is the thing you're leaving, our guide to Airflow alternatives covers that side. Pick it if you want the biggest community and your team already writes Python.
3. Dagster

Dagster is an orchestrator from Dagster Labs, now part of Prefect, that models your data as assets. You describe the tables and files you want, and it works out what to run. It ships as its own product with its own pricing.
It's the one that thinks about your data first and your tasks second. And yes, it shares an owner with Prefect now, so it isn't a clean exit. More on that in the next section.
Pros
- Asset-based orchestration with asset checks, lineage, and a catalog.
- Integration with dbt tests.
- Serverless or hybrid deployments, and a 30-day free trial.
Cons
- Usage credits mean the bill moves with how much you run.
- Starter covers only 3 users and 5 code locations.
- It's owned by Prefect now.
Pricing
- Solo is $10 a month plus $0.040 per credit, for 1 user.
- Starter is $100 a month plus $0.035 per credit, for up to 3 users.
- Pro is contact sales.
- A credit is one asset materialization or one op executed. Serverless compute is $0.010 a minute, and hybrid has no compute charge.
If your work is mostly moving data from A to B, our ETL automation page shows another way to run it. Pick Dagster if your world is data assets and lineage.
4. Temporal

Temporal is a durable execution engine from Temporal Technologies. Workflow state survives crashes and deploys, so you write less recovery code. It suits long-running, stateful processes, not classic batch data pipelines, and Temporal Cloud bills by usage with no monthly base fee.
Picture a video game that autosaves every second. If your server dies mid-run, Temporal picks up right where it stopped. That's the whole trick.
Pros
- Built-in retries with backoff, timeouts, and saga compensation.
- Timers that can sleep for months, plus cron-style schedules.
- SDKs for Go, Java, Python, TypeScript, .NET, PHP, Ruby, and Rust.
- Durable AI agent support, and no features locked behind plan upgrades.
Cons
- You write and run worker code, which is more to own than a scheduler.
- Billing by actions takes some estimating up front.
- It isn't built for classic batch data pipelines.
Pricing
- Pay-as-you-go starts at $50 per million actions, and volume discounts go down to $25.
- Storage is $0.042 per GB hour active and $0.00105 per GB hour retained.
- New accounts get $150 in credits for 90 days. Business support starts at $500 a month.
We cover the idea in our guide to durable execution, and our Temporal alternatives post covers the other direction. If you run AI agents on it, our agent governance page covers the controls to add. Pick Temporal if your workflows run for days and must never lose their place.
5. Kestra

Kestra is an open-source orchestrator from Kestra Technologies where you declare workflows in YAML. The open-source edition has unlimited flows and executions, while SSO, RBAC, and audit logs sit in the Enterprise edition. It suits teams that want a language-neutral tool with a big plugin catalog.
Kestra doesn't care what language your tasks use. SQL, Python, shell, Terraform, dbt- it'll run them side by side.
Pros
- 2,400+ plugins and event-driven scheduling.
- Code and no-code editors that stay in sync.
- An MCP server and AI agents in the open source edition.
- Runs in the cloud, on-prem, or air-gapped.
Cons
- SSO, RBAC, SCIM, audit logs, and human approvals are Enterprise only. Sound familiar? It's the same kind of gate Prefect puts up around governance.
- Kestra Cloud is request-access only.
Pricing
- Open source is free.
- Enterprise is an annual subscription per instance, with unlimited flows, tasks, and executions. Contact sales.
If MCP is why you're looking, our MCP gateway page shows how we handle it. Pick Kestra if you want YAML-first workflows and don't mind paying for governance later.
6. Windmill

Windmill is an open-source platform from Windmill Labs that turns scripts into workflows and apps. The free Community Edition has unlimited executions and supports up to 10 users with SSO. Paid cloud and self-hosted plans are priced on compute units. It suits script-first teams.
If your team already has a folder full of scripts doing real jobs, Windmill gives them a home.
Pros
- Free Community Edition with unlimited executions.
- Up to 10 users with SSO on the free plan.
- 100 free app guests per 30 days.
- Easy deployment on Fargate, Docker, or Kubernetes.
Cons
- Compute unit pricing takes some math to forecast.
- After 10 users, you move to a paid plan.
- Free plan support is community-only, on Discord.
Pricing
- Free from $0 with unlimited executions.
- Team and Enterprise plans for cloud and self-hosted, priced on compute units. Check Windmill's pricing page for exact rates.
If most of your scripts call other services, API orchestration may fit better. Pick Windmill if your team has a pile of scripts and wants them to act like one system.
7. Mage

Mage is a data pipeline tool from Mage AI with a visual editor and Python, SQL, R, and dbt blocks. Cloud starts at $29 a month plus $0.0167 per execution minute for one developer seat. It suits teams that do notebook-style data work and want a visual editor on top.
It feels like working in a notebook, except the notebook can run on a schedule.
Pros
- A visual pipeline editor with Python, SQL, R, and dbt blocks.
- A 7-day free trial with no credit card.
- MCP support for Claude, Codex, and Cursor.
Cons
- Billing per execution minute means long jobs cost more.
- Starter has 1 developer seat and 1 development environment.
- Team caps at 10 developer seats.
Pricing
- Starter is $29 a month plus $0.0167 per execution minute.
- Team is $100 a month plus the same rate, for up to 10 seats.
- Enterprise is custom. A standard execution minute includes 1 CPU and 4 GB of RAM.
If you're adding AI agents on top of your pipelines, our guide to agentic orchestration explains the patterns. Pick Mage if your team thinks in notebooks.
4. Is Unmeshed One of the Prefect Alternatives Worth Trying?
Unmeshed is one of the Prefect alternatives priced by workflow execution, not by seat. It comes from the team behind Netflix Conductor. You define workflows in JSON, YAML, or code, run workers in Java, Go, TypeScript, or Python, and self-host the whole platform. It's built for teams that outgrew per-seat pricing.
In gym terms, you pay for the workouts, not for how many people have a membership card. Here's what that looks like.
- Flat pricing by execution: The free tier covers 2,000 workflow executions a month, and Premium is $20 a month for 10,000. See our flat pricing for the current plans.
- Define it your way: JSON, YAML, or code, with a visual designer included.
- Hosted functions: Write steps in Python, JS, TS, or Go and run them without separate hosting. Our hosted functions page has the details.
- Approvals and rules: Build human-in-the-loop steps and use a built-in decision engine for logic.
- Self-host all of it: The full platform, control plane included, runs on your own VM or Kubernetes cluster.
Now the honest part. Unmeshed isn't a data asset catalog. If your team lives in dbt models and wants lineage on every table, Dagster fits that picture better. We're also newer than Airflow, so there are fewer community examples out there. And SSO and SAML are listed on our Enterprise plan, so check what your team needs.
Want the line-by-line version? Our full comparison covers it.
Stop Counting Seats.
Unmeshed counts one flat number per workflow execution, no matter how many people log in or how many workflows you deploy.
Count My Runs5. What Did the Dagster Acquisition Change?
Prefect announced on July 13, 2026, that it is acquiring Dagster Labs. Both products keep their names, open source licenses, and roadmaps, and pricing stays the same. For you, nothing breaks today, but the two orchestrators now share one owner, which matters when you pick a long-term tool.
Here's what we know. Both Prefect and Dagster posted about it, and Dagster's own pricing page now says "Part of Prefect."
Prefect describes the combined picture as Dagster for defining outcomes, Prefect for executing work, and FastMCP for governing AI agent access.
What we don't know is the deal price or what the roadmap looks like in two years. We can't predict that, and nobody else outside those companies can either.
So if Dagster was your plan B among Prefect alternatives, treat it as a different product from the same family, not a clean exit.
6. Which Workflow Tool Alternatives Fit Which Problem?
The right workflow tool alternatives depend on why you're leaving Prefect. If seat pricing hurts, look at flat-priced or open-source options. If you need durable execution, look at Temporal. If you live in data assets, look at Dagster. If governance is the gap, check which tier includes it.
| Your Problem | Look At | The Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Seat pricing hurts | Unmeshed, Airflow, Kestra, Windmill | Open source options mean you run them yourself |
| Need SSO without a sales call | Windmill (free for up to 10 users with SSO) | Past 10 users you move to a paid plan |
| Long-running, crash-safe work | Temporal, Unmeshed | Temporal means writing and running worker code |
| Data assets and lineage | Dagster | It's part of Prefect now |
| Python only is a limitation | Unmeshed (JSON, YAML, code), Kestra (YAML) | Different style, so flows get rewritten |
| Notebook-style data work | Mage | Per-minute billing adds up on long jobs |
Still comparing Prefect alternatives? Our roundup of orchestration tools goes wider than Prefect.
A quick word on migration. Moving off Prefect means rewriting your @flow functions into the new tool's format. Python to Python is the shorter walk, so Airflow, Dagster, Mage, and Windmill are easier there. Start with one flow, not all of them.
7. When Is Staying on Prefect the Better Call?
Staying on Prefect is the better call when your team is small, your flows are already Python, and the free or Starter plan covers you. In a Prefect vs alternatives debate, switching costs rewrite time, so only move when a clear limit costs you more than that.
Here's the case for staying.
- It's Python native: Decorators on plain functions are about as light as it gets.
- Small teams get a lot for free: Hobby covers 2 users and 5 deployments at no cost.
- There's an open source core: You can start without Prefect Cloud at all.
- Seat pricing is predictable: Prefect prices on seats and workspaces, not usage, so a heavy month won't spike the bill.
Back to the gym. If you train alone, a per-person membership is cheap. It only stings when the whole team joins.
Conclusion
The best Prefect alternatives depend on what's actually hurting, whether that's seat pricing, governance, durability, or the Dagster deal. Pick the one that fixes your biggest problem, run a small test flow, and only then plan a move.
If seats are the problem, that's where Unmeshed comes in among these Prefect alternatives. We charge by workflow execution, not by who's logged in.
